Digital opportunities and challenges when applying 5G technology in rail passenger transport
In competition between different transport modes, effective use of travel time is gaining ever more importance. Interruption-free communication and internet availability in the train are essential in this context. 5G technology with its high bandwidths and short latencies provides trains with outstanding opportunities for such Smart Mobility as well as for automation of rail operations with numerous rail-specific applications as Smart Rail. A concept paper prepared by quattron management consulting for the Cluster Bahntechnik of the Bavarian Cluster Campaign, which will be presented by Dr. Silvio Döring Managing Director of quattron), outlines the opportunities and challenges of 5G technology for Smart Mobility and Smart Rail.
ATO and ETCS – an ideal symbiosis?!
Automation of transport operations is another key issue for the future with regard to rail and road transport. Driverless cars and trucks are currently a major issue. Automatic Train Operation (ATO) has been well established in the rail sector for some time, but up to now has focused on niches in local transport. The objective of introducing automatic operation on a large scale in so-called mainline systems involves a fundamental change in requirements for system integration. Within a heterogenous system railway landscape operating existing systems as well as new systems such as ETCS, the number of interfaces increases with each new system integrated. Interaction of these systems and the key question “ATO and ETCS – an ideal symbiosis?!“ is looked at in detail by Dr. Michael Leining (Managing Director NEXTRAIL) in his keynote speech.
