Reduce complexity. Avoid placing unnecessary strain on nodes. Capacity is a top priority.
In order to increase rail passenger volumes, it is essential to enhance the attractiveness and stability of the rail system. As it will be difficult to influence the size of the rail network in Germany in the medium term, it is reasonable to assume that the existing network will face increased pressure.
To address this, targeted optimisation of existing capacities and better utilisation of available resources are necessary. The aim of the project is to identify innovative and practical solutions, both within and outside Germany, which are characterised by high performance, attractiveness and robustness and which can be adapted to the German rail network.
The proposed changes relate to expectations of the rail system, the culture of performance and punctuality, and the creation of incentives for more efficient capacity utilisation. The measures identified will be illustrated using a showcase example, translated into recommendations for action, and made available to the public via a dashboard. This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Transport Science at RWTH Aachen University.
Further information on this project can be found in our leaflet entitled “More tracks aren´t the answer to everything“.
